Shibuyunji District was created after Statutory Instrument 49 of 2013 formally designated it as such. After splitting off from Mumbwa District, the district first joined Lusaka Province. It was relocated back to Central Province in 2018, nevertheless. Situated in the southern region of Central Province, the District spans a large expanse of 2,087 km². The district is roughly 70 kilometers west of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Its borders are shared by six districts: Mazabuka District to the south, Kafue and Chilanga District to the east, Mumbwa District to the west, and Chisamba and Chibombo District to the north.
According to the Zambia Statistical Agency 2022 Preliminary report, the Population of the district stood at 97 047, (Zamstats, 2022). The Districts sex distribution is relatively balanced with about 49.94 Per cent of the population being Female while 50.06 Per cent are Males (census, 2022).
Twelve wards comprise the Shibuyunji District: Kapyanga West, Kapyanga East, Mukulaikwa, Mutombe, Kalundu, Chikonka, Chabota, Nakaiba, Makombwe, Nampeya, Sala, and Nampundwe. The constituency known as Mwembezhi is the only one in the district. Under the direction of Senior Chief Shakumbila of the Sala and Ila speaking people, whose palace is situated in Mumbwa District, the District has one chiefdom, Shakumbila Chiefdom. The district’s historical and cultural value is enhanced by his presence and influence. There are 205 villages in the chiefdom, with 17 senior headmen and roughly 190 headmen and headwomen. September marks the celebration of Ikubi Lya Loongo, the Sala’s principal traditional ceremony.
The principal engines of the Shibuyunji district economy are trade and commerce, as well as agriculture. Shibuyunji is also endowed with several mineral resources, including iron ore, copper ore, and silver. Zambia Mineral and Processing Company, Universal Mining Limited (UML), and Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Plc are the principal mining companies in the district. They are engaged in the production of copper pyrite, and at their peak, they produce 7,500 tons of pyrite concentrate annually.
